Will the Stellar Cartography Tool be Java-based, or platform-dependent?

Looks great. As a loyal Romulan I already claimed a sector. I did not take Romulas, will the capital sectors be reserved for skilled creators. Would be a good idea.

Why would I want my own sector when I own the known universe?

I'm sorry, did I say that out loud?

Three questions, two related and one not:

First, are the sectors named after actual stars positioned accurately relative to Sol? Second, what is the presumed distance from one edge of a sector to its opposite? These will be important for those of us working with such sectors, especially those close to Sol.

Finally, shouldn't the Cestus Sector be along the Federation border with the Gorn, rather than the Tholians? After all, Kirk's battle with the Gorn captain in TOS took place on Cestus III: a world which was presumably the third human colony in Cestus Sector.

the actual disposition were taken according to a map appeared in Startrek's encyclopedia. Don't forget that in the episodes the distances was not important, only the story...

However, without wanting to create a debate, I agree to change name of sectors to accomodate you ... Sector are 20ly x 20ly

    Just email me your suggestions

    Ferengi Space

I don't think the Ferengi have that much terroritory...They are not a conquering Empire like the Klingons, Romulans or Cardassians, nor are the a conglomeration of species such as the Federation.

They dont conquer they make pacts of exclusivity with the other systems. They have no real territory but defends their investments (in this territory).

What do you think of it?

Wow. I guess Sol is not at the exact center of its sector. If it were, Alpha Centauri would be in Sector 001 as well, rather than having a sector of its own. I guess those working on those sectors near Sol will have to coordinate, so we do not end up with three different Barnard's Star write-ups.

By the way, it might be easier to depict map grids by parsec rather than light-year. A sector becomes a grid roughly 6 x 6, which keeps the clutter to a minimum. A positioning system like that used by the Allies during World War II might be handy for exact placement of worlds relative to the others in a given sector, rather than trying to wrangle an entire traditional xyz grid using Sol as the zero-point on all axes.

Sector borders are thus contiguous, with variations said to be X or Y grid points (i.e., parsecs) up or down relative to its neighbors. That way our galaxy can undulate a trifle, rather than appearing flat. As for how thick a sector might be, I shan't venture for now. Mapping three dimensions in a two-dimensional medium is more work than I've a stomach for.

I don't want to create a perfect map (too complicated) but a simple, easy to use tool. After several years of game I noticed a lack of resources in information about the position of the major planets.
By example: how long, at warp 7, the journey lasts among Q' onos and Vulcan?

with de "Q" drive maybe 4 hours, but in fact it can take several month!!!

I choose to use 2D only for simplicity. The sector method was choose Because Decipher explain it in the narrator guide.

As soon as my programming is ended(at least the v1.0), I am going to send e-mail to the sector manager so that they know of e-mail of its neighbours. And I am going to insist on the communication. A section of my message board is reserved to this. Four persons are in charge of analizing sector, before it was put on-line, to seek for errors, doubled info or exaggeration.

But no despair, I intend to put mesure tools in the software. By example: to calculate the distance between two points (in LY or in parsec), the journey time according to the warp speed. Etc.
