    Smile Woo Hoo

Well. Its been 2 months since I gave up. Ad I am still clear of the habit.

Yep DanG has given up smoking, and at this time the magic 8-ball says that "All Signs Are Positive" that I can keep this up...

Now I have a question for anyone that has given up smoking in the past.

Without a change in diet or increase in comfort foods or alchohol consumption, I have noticed that my weight has increased slightly, something I dont want...

Anyone got any advice to help keep me at a comfortable girth (I can accept that I'll never be skin'n Bones)...

    Any advice?

Congratulations, Dan! Without a doubt you made the right decision.

Yep, I can feel the difference.

And it only took me 10 years, and an amount of money that would be scary if added up...

Way ta' go, Dan! Keep it up!

Not smoking, that is ... not the girth thingy.

From what I understand, weight gain is pretty common amongst those who kick the habit. A regular dose of cardio-vascular exercise should help out and get those lungs and heart back in fine shape in no time.

Come the 1st of August, I'm hoping to beat smoking for good. I've tried a couple times this year, but failed. Mostly due to job stress, or rather the lack of having a job recently. It's a vicious circle. Smoke. Stress out over money. Smoke. Get more stressed out because I smoke and it's expensive ... etc.

My wife and the other two smokers in my gaming group are setting the August 1st date as the "First Day of Healthy Gaming." With four of us trying to quit at the same time it should be a bit easier. I hope. Y'know, misery loves company and all.

Well done, Dan. One of the things I'm grateful for is my capacity of resisting the charm of nicotine. Knowing how addictive it is (and passing the temptation of smoking a few times per day, even when I never bought a pack ), and how much money it makes you spend, I could say that it was one of the best things you could do.

And if you want to avoid the weight-bounce effect, try walking a couple of kilometres four or five times a week. If you do that already, well, begin a gym plan.

On behalf of the non-smokers still living on this planet (barely), I congratulate you.

As for the girth, there's nothing wrong with it. James Kirk has one.

But if you want to get rid of it, get a dog. He will tell you when he needed walking everyday, and therefore forces you to go walking too.

Plus, having a cute dog is a chick magnet.

Bad news is, I am far more of a Cat person, and they are a bugger to walk... Up trees, along fence tops...

Thanks for your kind words and support.

And Steven. Misery might love company, but it works. I gave up to support my best friend (and because now was as god a time as any) along with my friends fiancee.

And neither I nor my friend have lit a cigarette since.

I myself am now down from a pack a day to about 3 to 5 cigs a day and on the way out completely.

But I also signed up at the gym to try and drop some xcess poundage as it is already, so I am not noticing a weight gain, but there ya go.

Tip number 1: Get yourself a hand-grip strength thingy. Everytime you feel like having a snack or a smoke use that instead, trust me it works out the tension and improves your grip

Tip Number 2: Cut up carrots and celery (you can also get low-fat ranch or whatever dressing to go with them as a dip) and when you want a snack, snack on them

Congrats, Dan! Here's hoping the willpower holds out!

Having never smoked, I don't really know what it's like to smoke then quit - but I'm guessing fresh air in your lungs is better than stale smoke!

As for exercise - take up a Martial Art - Karate, Kung Fu, Judo, Taekwondo, etc... They make for great fitness, and you learn to defend yourself as well!
